Picture Name: Bluebells & Pink Bush
Where painted: In studio from photo.
Medium: Oils on a narrow-sided canvas.
Size: 8ins square
Inspiration: I was given a set of 4 canvases, each 8 ins square
and knew straight away that I wanted to use them for a series of
paintings featuring bluebells, based on a number of photos I had taken
in my friends' garden at Lochanhead. This is the only one of the 4 I
have left.
Price: £50 (Inc. p & p) NEW |

Picture Name: The Bridge in Winter
Where painted: In studio, from a photo, with some artistic licence.
Medium: Gouache, finished off with pastel, on white watercolour paper.
Size: 16ins x 20ins including mount. Supplied framed under glass in a wooden frame to tone with the trees, with a grey wash.
Inspiration: This is from a photo my father took on a December
afternoon. It instantly appealed to me for painting because of the
orange trees and "blueness" of the snow - my favourite contrast.

Picture Name:- Rockcliffe Rockscape
Where Painted:- In studio from photo
Medium:- Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper.
Size:- 20ins x 16ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a plain black 'cube' style frame.
Inspiration:- Rockcliffe is a very rugged beach and I liked the
different textures of the rocks, sand, rockpools and raised patches of
grass, with the sea and Rough Island in the background. I would like to
paint this same view in colour at some stage.
Price:- £150 (including frame and p & p) NEW |

|
Picture Name:- Autumn Still Life
Where Painted:- In studio from life
Medium:- Watercolour
Size:- 15ins x 12ins (inclusive of mount supplied)
Inspiration:- I have always wanted to have a go at painting shiny
new chestnuts and thought watercolour would be the best medium for
them. I wanted to feature some chestnut leaves in the background and
was lucky enough to find one that had fallen from the tree intact.
Price:- £65 (including p & p) NEW |
 |
Where Painted:
In studio from life
Medium: Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper
Size: 15ins x 12ins - inclusive of mount supplied
Inspiration:
I inherited a cherry tree when I moved house last year. I
like the bright colour of the cherries, especially when they are just
starting to ripen and had wanted to paint them since I moved here, but
missed my chance last year as I had an exhibition on at the time they looked
their best. I managed to complete the painting in a day, as the cherries
don't stay fresh for long. I don't know if they are an edible type of
cherry, so once the painting was finished I put the cherries on the ground
under the tree so that the birds could have them.

Where Painted: In studio from photo (with artistic licence for composition)
Medium: Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper
Size: 16ins x 20ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass
in a plain black 'cube' style frame.
Inspiration: The beaches along the Solway coast are all very distinct from
one another, although only a few miles apart. The main features of
Sandyhills beach are the ancient fence and the grasses. I aimed to just
'suggest' the rough scrub and small trees in the background with the
charcoal without too much detail.

time.

Where Painted: In
studio
Medium:
Acrylics on canvas
Size:
50cm x 50cm
Inspiration:
The 'graduated' sky was from a photo I'd taken at the River Nith at Carnsalloch.
I'd always wanted to paint this type of sky. The foreground landscape is largely
from my imagination.

Name:
Trunks 1
Where Painted:
In studio
Medium:
Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper
Size:
14ins x 18ins - inclusive of mount supplied
Inspiration:
This is a bit of a diversion for me, as I usually only use watercolour for still
life subjects rather than landscapes. The trees are based on ones I photographed
in the gardens of the Baron's Craig Hotel at Rockcliffe, although I have
exaggerated the pattern of them and some of the colours I could see.

Where painted:
In studio, simplified from a photo
Medium:
Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper.
Size:
16ins x 20ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a plain black
'cube' style frame.
Inspiration: This is inspired by a photo I took at Mabie Forest some years ago,
when they were felling part of it. I thought the picture worked better for being
not too detailed.

View from Screel
Where painted:
In the small studio at The Tollbooth, Kirkcudbright, when I was exhibiting there
a few years ago, working from a number of photos.
Medium:
Oils on canvas-covered board.
Size:
18ins x 23ins (supplied unframed)
Inspiration:
When I was working in the bank, a group of us went a walk up Screel Hill, near
Dalbeattie, one evening. I'd taken some photos, and used a combination of them
as the basis for this picture. I was drawn to the colours and cracked texture of
the rocks in the foreground, the pine trees and the distant Auchencairn Bay

Name:
Pastel Forest
Where painted: In
studio
Medium:
Oils on canvas
Size:
8ins x 20ins
Inspiration:
This was meant to be something entitled 'Bright Light, Red Carpet' based on a
photograph of Mabie Forest in autumn with the sun shining through dark tree
trunks. The tree trunks didn't come out very dark, and I decided I preferred the
paler pastel shades anyway. This is the first painting I've done when I didn't
get what I had 'seen' in my mind beforehand.

Autumn Tapestry
Where Painted: At
The Tolbooth in Kirkcudbright, while I was exibiting there, working from a
photograph
Medium:
Oils on a deep-sided box canvas
Size
24cms x 30cms
Inspiration:
This was inspired by a dodgy photo I took at Mabie Forest. I must have moved the
camera as I pressed the button, but I thought it gave the image a 'tapestry'
effect and the colours appealed to me, so I used it as the basis for this
painting. Anyone who visited the exhibition in September 2009 may have seen me
working on it.

16 ins x 16 ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a plain
1 inch black frame.
Inspiration:
I often like to photograph, or occasionally sketch, the horses before they set
off on the annual Riding of the Marches celebrations. The incongruousness
of horses alongside the high street shops appeals to me - also the excitement of
'getting ready' before the event.

Medium:
Pastel on paper

wooden frame to tone with the foreground horse, washed over with grey.
Inspiration:
I photographed the horses going up Bank Street in Dumfries on their way to take
part in the annual Riding of the Marches festivities. I didn't think the
setting they were in would make a good picture, so I placed them in an imaginary
rural road.

Name: Bathers at
Rockcliffe
Where
painted: In studio from a number of photos
Medium:
Pastel on paper
Size:
16.25 ins x 22 ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a
1.25 ins wooden frame. The inside edge of the frame, for the first half
inch is un-stained medium-dark wood, the remainder being stained in blue to tone
with the sea colour.
Inspiration:
I had painted a similar picture of two of my nephews and their cousins, also
paddling at Rockcliffe, for a Christmas present and decided to do something
similar to put up for sale. Some of the bathers are known to me, others not, but
I didn't put much detail in their faces as the picture is more about the way
they are moving or standing and the reflections in the water.

Where painted: In studio from photos with some artistic license.
Medium: Oils
with Palette knife on box canvas
Size:
30cms x 40cms (supplied unframed)
Inspiration: My young nephew is a keen

spite of exploring Rockcliffe during the summer, I've not yet been able to find
them, but I do have a rough idea where they are. I enjoyed trying to
portray the texture of the rocks.

I had very little time to paint, and wanted to capture just the

Medium:
Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper
size:
12 ins x 20 ins including mount supplied.
Inspiration:
You don't get very long to work on irises as they're over in a day, so I did
this painting without any pre-drawing. I painted the first flower when the
other two were still to open, so that they wouldn't be wilted by the time I'd
got round to them.

Autumn Hydrangea I
Where Painted: In
studio
Medium:
Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper
Size:
14ins x 18ins - inclusive of mount supplied
Inspiration:
A friend commissioned me to paint another type of flower in the same style as
'Essence of Sweet Peas'. I chose hydrangeas as I had been admiring the autumn
colours of them in the garden. I painted a few for my friend to choose from and
this is the one I am happiest with, especially the vase which I have painted
"economically". It's difficult to say how long I spent working on this one as I
was baking batches of rolls at the time and kept having to stop what I was doing
to attend to things in the kitchen!

Size:

Inspiration:
Favourite combination of colours. I always wanted to have a go at painting
Montbretia. I bought the vase for £1.50 from Ikea - it is made of wonderfully
flawed glass and I love to paint it. The title is also the name of a
bagpipe tune.

Size:
12.5 ins x 17.5 ins - no mount or frame included
Inspiration:
I like the Mabie pond because of its long reflections. I had to use a bit
of imagination with the colours as there wasn't much colour in the photos I was
using. I painted most of it using my fingers as I couldn't get the effects
I wanted using a brush.

Where painted: In studio from a number of photos
Medium:
Charcoal and white chalk on cream pastel paper.
Size:
16 ins x 20 ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a plain
1 inch black frame.
Inspiration: I'd just completed a
charcoal drawing featuring a tree that was leaning badly and titled it "Still
Standing". Wondering what else I could do on the theme of Still Standing,
I came up with the idea of the Midsteeple in the centre of Dumfries. It is
several hundred years old and due to having been badly maintained over the years
is now in such a state of disrepair that it is costing millions to restore it to
its former glory. The top section of the building has been taken away for
repair as there was a real danger of it falling down.
