Picture Name:  Bluebells & Pink Bush
Where painted:  In studio from photo.
Medium:  Oils on a narrow-sided canvas.
Size:  8ins square
Inspiration:  I was given a set of 4 canvases, each 8 ins square and knew straight away that I wanted to use them for a series of paintings featuring bluebells, based on a number of photos I had taken in my friends' garden at Lochanhead.  This is the only one of the 4 I have left.
Price:  £50 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Picture Name:  The Bridge in Winter
Where painted: In studio, from a photo, with some artistic licence.
Medium:  Gouache, finished off with pastel, on white watercolour paper.
Size:  16ins x 20ins including mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a wooden frame to tone with the trees, with a grey wash.
Inspiration:  This is from a photo my father took on a December afternoon.  It instantly appealed to me for painting because of the orange trees and "blueness" of the snow - my favourite contrast.
Price:  £200 (including frame and p & p) NEW

Picture Name:-  Rockcliffe Rockscape
Where Painted:-  In studio from photo
Medium:-  Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper.
Size:- 20ins x 16ins inclusive of mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a plain black 'cube' style frame.
Inspiration:-  Rockcliffe is a very rugged beach and I liked the different textures of the rocks, sand, rockpools and raised patches of grass, with the sea and Rough Island in the background.  I would like to paint this same view in colour at some stage.
Price:-  £150 (including frame and p & p) NEW

Picture Name:-  Autumn Still Life
Where Painted:-  In studio from life
Medium:-  Watercolour
Size:-  15ins x 12ins (inclusive of mount supplied)
Inspiration:-  I have always wanted to have a go at painting shiny new chestnuts and thought watercolour would be the best medium for them.  I wanted to feature some chestnut leaves in the background and was lucky enough to find one that had fallen from the tree intact.
Price:-  £65 (including p & p) NEW

Name:                Cherries

Where Painted:  In studio from life

Medium:           Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                15ins x 12ins - inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        I inherited a cherry tree when I moved house last year.  I like the bright colour of the cherries, especially when they are just starting to ripen and had wanted to paint them since I moved here, but missed my chance last year as I had an exhibition on at the time they looked their best.  I managed to complete the painting in a day, as the cherries don't stay fresh for long.  I don't know if they are an edible type of cherry, so once the painting was finished I put the cherries on the ground under the tree so that the birds could have them.

Price:               £60 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                Sandyhills

Where Painted:  In studio from photo (with artistic licence for composition)

Medium:           Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper

Size:                16ins x 20ins inclusive of mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a plain black 'cube' style frame.

Inspiration:        The beaches along the Solway coast are all very distinct from one another, although only a few miles apart.  The main features of Sandyhills beach are the ancient fence and the grasses.  I aimed to just 'suggest' the rough scrub and small trees in the background with the charcoal without too much detail.

Price:               £150 (Including frame and p & p) NEW

Name:                Light in the Clearing

Where Painted:  In studio

Medium:           Oils on canvas

Size:                30cm x 40cm

Inspiration:        This was based on a photo my nephew, Fraser took at Mabie Forest.  I find a lot of inspiration in forests and could paint scenes such as this all the time.

Price:               £70 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                The River at Canonbie

Where Painted:  In studio

Medium:           Gouache on a 'not' surface watercolour paper

Size:                22ins x 16 ins inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        The river Liddel is on the border of Scotland and England.  This painting was done from a picture my brother took in connection with his work as a civil engineer - with a bit of artists licence taken with the colours.

Price:                £70 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                Almost Cloudless

Where Painted:  In studio

Medium:           Acrylics on canvas

Size:                50cm x 50cm

Inspiration:        The 'graduated' sky was from a photo I'd taken at the River Nith at Carnsalloch. I'd always wanted to paint this type of sky. The foreground landscape is largely from my imagination.

Price:               £70 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                 Trunks 1

Where Painted:   In studio

Medium:            Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                14ins x 18ins - inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        This is a bit of a diversion for me, as I usually only use watercolour for still life subjects rather than landscapes. The trees are based on ones I photographed in the gardens of the Baron's Craig Hotel at Rockcliffe, although I have exaggerated the pattern of them and some of the colours I could see.

Price:               £60 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                 Still Standing I

Where painted:   In studio, simplified from a photo

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk on beige pastel paper.

Size:                16ins x 20ins inclusive of mount. Supplied framed under glass in a plain black 'cube' style frame.

Inspiration:        This is inspired by a photo I took at Mabie Forest some years ago, when they were felling part of it. I thought the picture worked better for being not too detailed.

Price:               £120 (Including frame and p & p) NEW

Name:                View from Screel

Where painted:   In the small studio at The Tollbooth, Kirkcudbright, when I was exhibiting there a few years ago, working from a number of photos.

Medium:            Oils on canvas-covered board.

Size:                18ins x 23ins (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        When I was working in the bank, a group of us went a walk up Screel Hill, near Dalbeattie, one evening. I'd taken some photos, and used a combination of them as the basis for this picture. I was drawn to the colours and cracked texture of the rocks in the foreground, the pine trees and the distant Auchencairn Bay

Price:               £75 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                Pastel Forest

Where painted:  In studio

Medium:            Oils on canvas

Size:                8ins x 20ins

Inspiration:        This was meant to be something entitled 'Bright Light, Red Carpet' based on a photograph of Mabie Forest in autumn with the sun shining through dark tree trunks. The tree trunks didn't come out very dark, and I decided I preferred the paler pastel shades anyway. This is the first painting I've done when I didn't get what I had 'seen' in my mind beforehand.

Price:               £70 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                Autumn Tapestry

Where Painted:  At The Tolbooth in Kirkcudbright, while I was exibiting there, working from a photograph

Medium:           Oils on a deep-sided box canvas

Size                 24cms x 30cms

Inspiration:        This was inspired by a dodgy photo I took at Mabie Forest. I must have moved the camera as I pressed the button, but I thought it gave the image a 'tapestry' effect and the colours appealed to me, so I used it as the basis for this painting. Anyone who visited the exhibition in September 2009 may have seen me working on it.

Price:               £50 (Inc. p & p) NEW

Name:                Lane with Bright Tree

Where Painted:  At the Tollbooth in Kirkcudbright, while exhibiting there in September 2009, working from a photo.

Medium:            Oils painted on a deep-sided box canvas

Size:                24cms x 30cms

Inspiration:        This lane is on the edge of Mabie Forest.  I have tried to keep the rest of the picture toned down in colour and texture to make the tree stand out.

Price:               £50 (inc. p & p) NEW

SM_Hydrangeas.jpg (20101 bytes)

Name:                Hydrangeas

Where painted:  Still life set up in my 'studio', i.e., dining table

Medium:            Watercolour painted on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                16ins x 20 ins - inclusive of mount.  The picture is in a mount but not framed.

Inspiration:        I like the colours in hydrangeas, particularly the blues, but do find them difficult to paint.

Price:               £55.00 (inc. p&p)

Hyacinths.jpg (40972 bytes)

Name:                Still Life with Hyacinths

Where Painted:  from still life set up in studio

Medium:            Pastel on paper

Size:                Total framed size, 19 ins x 23 ins, inclusive of a 1.75in flat, matt silver coloured frame and an all round 2 in mount.  Framed behind glass.

Inspiration:        Hyacinths are a favourite flower of mine, and I wanted to attempt capturing the textures and colours of the moss covering the plant pot.

Price:               £150 (inc. p&p)

Freshly_Picked_Plumbs.jpg (15927 bytes)

Name:                Freshly Picked

Where Painted:  In studio, from a still life I had set up

Medium:            Watercolour, painted on a hot pressed surface paper.

Size:                16 ins X 12 ins including mount.  (Supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        My brother has a plum tree in his garden and I like to paint the plums as I can use unusual combinations of colour in them.

Price:               £35 (inc. p&p)

Old_Bridge_Fine_Day.jpg (33688 bytes)

Name:                 Old Bridge, Fine Day

Where painted:   From quite a high vantage point overlooking the bridge.

Medium:            Gouache, painted on Fabriano 'not' surface watercolour paper.

Size:                Painted area - approx 14 ins x 10 ins.  Will supply in an 18 ins x 14 ins mount.

Inspiration:        This was painted for the local Riverside Painting Challenge on 3rd June 2006.  I painted it from the seat where I used to go as a child to watch the bands beating retreat from across the river, at the end of the annual riding of the marches festivities.

Price:               £50 (inc. p&p)

Lakeland_Boats.jpg (63725 bytes)

Name:                  Lakeland Boats

Where Painted:   In studio from photos of boats on Derwentwater with artistic license to simplify foreground and recede background.

Medium:            Oils painted on board.

Size:                14 ins x 10 ins (supplied unframed).

Inspiration:        I like to paint in the two opposite colours of blue and orange and started each colour I needed by mixing an orange shade first then adding blue.

Price:               £60 (inc. p&p)

Rose_in_Smokey_Glass.jpg (18675 bytes)

Name:                 Rose in Smokey Glass

Where painted:   From still life set up in studio.

Medium:            Watercolour paper with a 'not' surface.

Size:                16 ins x 20 ins (including mount)  Supplied unframed.

Inspiration:        These roses grow outside my living room window and are good to paint because of their colour - somewhere between pink and coral - and as there aren't too many petals.

Price:                £55 (inc. p&p)

Chat.jpg (84433 bytes)

Name:                A Chat with the Duke

Where painted:  In studio from an old photo

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk/soft pastel on pink pastel paper

Size:                Including mount - 20 ins x 16 ins.  Supplied framed under glass in a plain 1 inch black frame.

Inspiration:        The photo is of my father on a visit to Walmer Castle 'chatting' to a bust of the Duke of Wellington.  I was drawn to it because I liked the pose and also the Contre Jour lighting

Price:               £150 (including frame and p & p)

Dark_Horses.jpg (107952 bytes)

Name:                'Afore the Mairches II - Dark Horses

Where painted:   In studio, from a number of photos

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk on cream coloured pastel paper.

Size:                16 ins x 16 ins inclusive of mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a plain 1 inch black frame.

Inspiration:        I often like to photograph, or occasionally sketch, the horses before they set off on the annual Riding of the Marches celebrations.  The incongruousness of horses alongside the high street shops appeals to me - also the excitement of 'getting ready' before the event.

Price:               £100 (including frame and p & p)

Southerness.jpg (66895 bytes)

Name:                 Southerness

Where painted:   In studio from photos

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk on cream coloured pastel paper.

Size:                 16 ins x 20 ins inclusive of mount, supplied framed under glass in a plain 1 inch black frame.

Inspiration:        This is a side view of the lighthouse from a low vantage point.  The plant growth appearing to be almost as high as the lighthouse appealed to me.

Price:               £150 (including frame and p & p)

Canter.jpg (24672 bytes)

Name:                Morning Canter

Where painted:  In studio - the horses from a photo, the background imaginary

Medium:            Pastel on paper

Size:                16.5 ins x 20.5 ins including mount - supplied under glass in a 1 inch wide wooden frame to tone with the foreground horse, washed over with grey.

Inspiration:        I photographed the horses going up Bank Street in Dumfries on their way to take part in the annual Riding of the Marches festivities.  I didn't think the setting they were in would make a good picture, so I placed them in an imaginary rural road.

Price:                £150 (including frame and p & p)

Roses.jpg (18490 bytes)

Name:                Roses

Where painted:  In studio from a still life

Medium:            Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

size:                15.5 ins x 19 ins including mount

Inspiration:        These roses grow outside my living room window.  I like their colour and the fact that they have few enough petals for me to paint them individually.  There were no petals or leaves left on them by the time the painting was finished.

Price:               £60 (Inc. p & p)

Annan_River.jpg (33069 bytes)

Name:                Annan River

Where painted:  At the scene - as part of the Annandale Painting Challenge 2006

Medium:           Gouache on a rough textured watercolour paper

Size:                14 ins x 18 ins including mount supplied

Inspiration:        I had known there was a good view of the river from the back of the town hall after having had a temping job there a couple of years ago.  I found a bench near there looking on to this view, which I thought was stunning.

Price:               £40 (inc. p & p)

Windfall_Reflections.jpg (35231 bytes)

Name:                Windfall Reflections

Where painted:  In studio from a still life

Medium:           Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

size:                12.5 ins x 13 ins inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        I found these plums on the wall around my car port.  They had fallen from a tree in a neighbouring garden.  I was experimenting with various still life arrangements and liked this one because of the long purple reflections in the shiny surface of the cup.

Price:               £35 (inc. p & p)

3_Pairs.jpg (15077 bytes)

Name:                Three Pairs

Where painted:  In studio from still life

Medium:           Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper.

Size:                14.75 ins x 9.5 ins - inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        Again, I just think the colours on plums, especially when they are just beginning to ripen, are stunning.  I can't remember now what gave me the idea for the title.

Price:               £30 (inc. p & p)

Paddling_Rockcliffe.jpg (24497 bytes)

Name:                Bathers at Rockcliffe

Where painted:  In studio from a number of photos

Medium:           Pastel on paper

Size:                16.25 ins x 22 ins inclusive of mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a 1.25 ins wooden frame.  The inside edge of the frame, for the first half inch is un-stained medium-dark wood, the remainder being stained in blue to tone with the sea colour.

Inspiration:        I had painted a similar picture of two of my nephews and their cousins, also paddling at Rockcliffe, for a Christmas present and decided to do something similar to put up for sale. Some of the bathers are known to me, others not, but I didn't put much detail in their faces as the picture is more about the way they are moving or standing and the reflections in the water.

Price:              £165 (including frame and p & p)

One_Iris.jpg (10616 bytes)

Name:                Iris

Where painted:  In studio from life

Medium:           Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                10 ins x 18 ins including mount supplied

Inspiration:        My very good friends - and sometime employers - are keen gardeners and grow a lot of different varieties of iris.  This is a miniature one from a bunch they gave me the last time I was working for them.

Price:              £20 (inc. p & p)

Mabie Beech.jpg (55881 bytes)

Picture Name:    Mabie Beech

Where painted:   In studio from photos

Medium:            Oils with palette knife on canvas.

Size:                30 cms x 40 cms (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        I am very familiar with this part of Mabie Forest.  It is off the beaten track with the featured small beech sapling in among taller beech trees and a few pines.

Price:               £70 (including p & p)

Cliffs.jpg (41205 bytes)

Name:                Rock Cliffs at Rockcliffe

Where painted:  In studio from photos with some artistic license.

Medium:            Oils with Palette knife on box canvas

Size:                30cms x 40cms (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        My young nephew is a keen photographer and took some pictures of these cliffs while on holiday.  In spite of exploring Rockcliffe during the summer, I've not yet been able to find them, but I do have a rough idea where they are.  I enjoyed trying to portray the texture of the rocks.

Price:               £70 (including p & p)

Solway Sunrise.jpg (47023 bytes)

Name:                Solway Sunrise

Where painted:  In studio from a series of photographs.

Medium:            Oils with palette knife on box canvas.

Size:                30cms x 40cms (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        Again this was painted from photos taken by my young nephew, Fraser, who'd got up one morning on holiday to photograph the sun rising from between Rough Island and the mainland at Rockcliffe.  I liked the sky colours and impression of wet mud in the foreground.

Price:               £70 (including p & p)

Rockcliffe_Seafront.jpg (40185 bytes)

Name:                 Rockcliffe Seafront

Where painted:   In studio, from photos taken at Rockcliffe, with artistic licence used in the background and foreground areas for compositional purposes

Medium:            Oils, painted on canvas-covered board

Size:                14 ins x 10 ins (Unframed)

Inspiration:        The third in a series of Southerness paintings.  I have painted this one more freely than the first two.

Price:               £60 (inc. p&p)  SOLD

Essence_of_Sweet_Peas.jpg (18982 bytes)

Name:                 Essence of Sweet Peas

Where Painted:   In studio from life

Medium:            Watercolours on a 'not' surface paper.

Size:                Supplied in a 14 in x 18 in mount

Inspiration:        I had very little time to paint, and wanted to capture just the 'essence' of the sweet peas.  I completed the painting in 1 hour, 5 minutes.  Fading natural light suited the flowers better than artificial, and it was almost dark by the time the picture was finished.

Price:                £35 including mount and p&p SOLD

Twin_Peaks.jpg (51604 bytes)

Name:                 Twin Peaks, Rockcliffe

Where Painted:   In studio from photos with adjustment for composition

Medium:            Oils painted on a deep-sided box canvas

Size:                24cms x 30cms

Dumfries_Autumn.jpg (42397 bytes)

Name:                Dumfries Autumn

Where painted:  At a nightclass, from a charcoal drawing and photo

Medium:           Acrylics on a 'not' surface watercolour paper

Size:                18.75 ins x 13 ins including mount supplied

Inspiration:        I liked the autumn colours on the tree in the centre and the combinations of very old parts of the town - the Old Bridge House and the convent in the distance - and the modern flats.  It was the first thing I ever painted when learning to use acrylics.

Price:               £35 (inc. p & p)  SOLD

Irises.jpg (17089 bytes)

Name:                Irises

Where painted:  In studio from life

Medium:           Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

size:                12 ins x 20 ins including mount supplied.

Inspiration:        You don't get very long to work on irises as they're over in a day, so I did this painting without any pre-drawing.  I painted the first flower when the other two were still to open, so that they wouldn't be wilted by the time I'd got round to them.

Price:               £30 (inc. p & p)  SOLD

Cotts_and_LH.jpg (42993 bytes)

Name:                 Cottages and Lighthouse

Where Painted:   In studio from photos

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk/soft pastel on cream coloured pastel paper

Size:                 Including mount - 20 ins x 16 ins.  Supplied framed under glass with a plain 1 inch black frame.

Price:               £150 (including frame and p & p)  SOLD

Rugged_Rocks.jpg (48203 bytes)

Name:                Rugged Rocks at Rockcliffe

Where Painted:  In studio from photos with artistic licence

Medium:            Oils painted with pallet knives on a deep-sided box canvas

Size:                30 cms x 24 cms (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        I enjoyed working on these rocks with a trowel-shaped palette knife that I've had since 1991and hardly used to date.  It was perfect for the job!

Price:               £40 (Inc. p & p)  SOLD

Coastal_Path.jpg (51730 bytes)

Name:                 Coastal Path at Rockcliffe

Where painted:   In studio from photo with artistic licence

Medium:            Oils painted with palette knife on a box canvas

Size:                30 cms x 24 cms (supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        I liked the way the cloud pattern and the path appear to go towards a central point.  It was unintentional, but the cloud pattern somehow reminds me of the top corner of the Union Jack!

Price:               £40 (Inc. p & p)  SOLD

Name:                Autumn Hydrangea I

Where Painted:  In studio

Medium:            Watercolour on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                14ins x 18ins - inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        A friend commissioned me to paint another type of flower in the same style as 'Essence of Sweet Peas'. I chose hydrangeas as I had been admiring the autumn colours of them in the garden. I painted a few for my friend to choose from and this is the one I am happiest with, especially the vase which I have painted "economically". It's difficult to say how long I spent working on this one as I was baking batches of rolls at the time and kept having to stop what I was doing to attend to things in the kitchen!

Price:               £60 (Inc. p & p) SOLD

Path_to_the_Lighthouse.jpg (48905 bytes)

Name:                Path to the Lighthouse

Where Painted:  In studio from photos taken at Southerness

Medium:            Oils painted on board

Size:                14 ins x 10 ins (Supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        I have long been fascinated by the 300-years-old Southerness Lighthouse.  I always wondered what was behind its locked door and was able to find out last year when it was briefly opened to the public.

Price:               £60 (inc. p&p)SOLD

Keswick_Sunset.jpg (33404 bytes)

Name:                 Keswick Sunset

Where Painted:   In studio from photos.

Medium:            Pastel on paper

Size:                17.5 ins x 23 ins. framed size.  Supplied in a 5/8 inch black wooden frame with a gold inside edge.

Inspiration:         I liked the way the setting sun was reflecting off the hill, and the restricted amount of colour in the scene.

Price:                £150 including the frame and p&p. SOLD

Orange_and_Blue.jpg (19268 bytes)

Name:                 The Orange and the Blue

Where painted:   From still life set up in studio

Medium:            Watercolour painted on a 'not' surface paper

Size:                 45cms x 66cms - inclusive of mount supplied

Inspiration:        Favourite combination of colours.  I always wanted to have a go at painting Montbretia.  I bought the vase for £1.50 from Ikea - it is made of wonderfully flawed glass and I love to paint it.  The title is also the name of a bagpipe tune.

Price:               £65 (Inc. p & p) SOLD

Mabie_Pond.jpg (37955 bytes)

Name:                Mabie Pond

Where painted:  In the small studio at the Tollbooth, Kirkcudbright while I was exhibiting there in 2005.

Medium:           Acrylics painted on very strong primed cardboard

Size:                12.5 ins x 17.5 ins - no mount or frame included

Inspiration:        I like the Mabie pond because of its long reflections.  I had to use a bit of imagination with the colours as there wasn't much colour in the photos I was using.  I painted most of it using my fingers as I couldn't get the effects I wanted using a brush.

Price:               £35 (inc. p & p) SOLD

Criffel_and_Caravans.jpg (44670 bytes)

Name:                Criffel and Caravans

Where painted:  In studio, from photos I took at nearby Southerness, with some artistic licence

Medium:            Oil applied with a pallette knife, painted on board

Size:                Painting size is 14 ins x 10 ins.  (Supplied unframed)

Inspiration:        I have always loved Southerness since some enjoyable holidays there when I was very young.

Price:               £60 (inc. p&p) SOLD

Steeple.jpg (18838 bytes)

Picture Name:    Still Standing II

Where painted:   In studio from a number of photos

Medium:            Charcoal and white chalk on cream pastel paper.

Size:                16 ins x 20 ins inclusive of mount.  Supplied framed under glass in a plain 1 inch black frame.

Inspiration:        I'd just completed a charcoal drawing featuring a tree that was leaning badly and titled it "Still Standing".  Wondering what else I could do on the theme of Still Standing, I came up with the idea of the Midsteeple in the centre of Dumfries.  It is several hundred years old and due to having been badly maintained over the years is now in such a state of disrepair that it is costing millions to restore it to its former glory.  The top section of the building has been taken away for repair as there was a real danger of it falling down.

Price:               £150 (including frame and p & p) SOLD
